Understanding BAH in 2024

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is one of the most valuable components of your military compensation — and one of the most misunderstood. BAH rates are set by the Department of Defense based on local housing costs, and they vary significantly by duty station, pay grade, and dependency status.

In 2024, the average BAH rate increased by approximately 5.4% compared to 2023, reflecting changes in the national housing market. Service members with dependents receive a higher BAH rate than those without, and rates are protected — they do not decrease below your current rate as long as your status does not change.

Use our BAH Calculator to look up rates for any zip code in the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, or U.S. territories. Filter by pay grade and dependency status to see exactly what you should expect to receive.
